having fun is what it's all about >> out -- caught on camera. what a suspect said before launching an assault. flood were concerns continue in the midwest as president obama takes a big step to help those in missouri. a dangerous discovery at gillette stadium, just hours before the winter classic. a stash of weapons found and now a man is under arrest. plus, a crucial week for the patriots. home field advantage for the playoffs on the line, as they get ready to take on the miami dolphins. >> announcer: this is 7 news today in new england. >> good morning. 7:30 on this sunday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm nancy chen. we have plenty of news ahead in the next half hour. but, first, let's take a live look outside this morning and get a check of your sunday

the sun starting to come up there, bri. >> bri: beautiful pictures on twitter. i'd love to share them on air. current temperatures just below zero the freezing mark in most places. 28 in bedford. 31 in the city of boston. but throw out those numbers, this is what we have to dress for as we head out the door this morning, it feels like 14 in worcester and 21 in boston. just as we were getting used to the cold and more typical winter feel, here's the frigid air troping in overnight tonight. boy, this cold front is going to make things chilly. once we drop below freezing overnight tonight, we will not recover. so for our arctic blast on the way for us, the first of the season, highs will top out in the 20s. we have lows in the single digits. but wind chill readings could get as low as 15 below zero tomorrow night. plus, ocean-effect snow on the way for the cape. we'll get to the details and run through the timeline in just a few minutes.

officer assaulted on the job this morning. an everett man is facing serious charges, but police told 7's kelli o'hara, this incident could have had a much different ending. >> i think it's crazy. a lot of people out there that really don't know what they're doing. >> scary. that's crazy. why would someone do. that >> reporter: reaction across the city to video of a man punch tag boston police officer again and again. you can see the altercation play out on the left side of the screen in this eyewitness video. there's a man in red, allegedly hilting that officer. and p.p.d. says it was without warning. the man was 32-year-old andrew bowman and he approached the window and said, you heard about began. things got even more intense after bowman ran away and other officers caught up with him. he said, allegedly, you were doomed and going to die. however the 2323-year-old's family says this was all a mistake and completely out of

they tell 7 news off camera tonight, bowman has been under extreme stress. people we met say officers showed restraint, especially because he never even pulled out a weapon. >> i think it's great. i think it's important. and there's going to be different situations for different cops. and i think there are a lot of great cops throughout that do the right thing. >> they showed remarkable restraint for somebody be that just got punched in the face. >> reporter: right. right. well, cops have to think about that now. they've gotten such a bad rep lately, too. >> reporter: kelli o'hara, 7 news today in new england. >> nancy: also on 7, police in rochester, new hampshire, searching for an alleged police impersonator. detectives say a man dressed in some kind of uniform approached two young children last night. the alleged impersonator then told the kids to hand over the baseball bat they were carrying, then drove off. anyone with information is asked to call police. foxborough police making a dangerous discovery before friday's winter classic. they found an arsenal of weapons inside a car in the gillette stadium parking lot.

and a meat cleaver were found before the big game. 7'sjohn cocoa talked to police. >> reporter: just two hours before the winter classic caked off new year's day in foxborough, police found this arsenal of weapons, swords, a stun gun, meat cleaver and more. 7 news showed the picture to people saturday. >> wow. that's lovely. >> reporter: the stash was allegedly found in the car of this man, 48-year-old matthew barometric -- bromson in kefnlgt he's picked up in a parking lot for stadium employees. police say he was drunk and made threats to several people. >> this is your life. you want to go and enjoy something with your family and friends and you find out something like that is going on right behind you. not good. >> reporter: the man is facing serious charges, including three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. >> it's great that security was on it and they found him. and the event went off without a

>> reporter: police have run into bromson the day before. he was allegedly thrown out of a hotel. they believe he currently lives out of his car. then in 2014, he was arrested after a standoff at his home in connecticut, where he reportedly threatened to shoot police. john cocoa, 7 news today in new england. >> nancy: state police racing to the rescue of a woman lost in the woods in hadley. police spotted her from the search plane. the woman was originally suppose to meet up with a friend, but lost track of where she was. she was stranded for eight hours and not hurt. tree slamming into a tree in brockton. it happened on reservoir street. the back of the car heavily damaged. no word yet on any injuries. the cause of that crash is under investigation. we're continuing to follow a developing story now out of india. troops still battling at least two gunmen near the pakistan border. early saturday morning a group of gunmen attacked the base.

security troops have been killed in the gun fight so far. the officials still trying to figure out where those attackers came. from and we're following more news today. a manhunt underway in israel. police searching for the gunmen who opened fire outside of a pub. a massachusetts mans a just block ace way when the attack happened. he spoke to 7 it's -- 7's jadiann thompson about the terrifying scene. >> reporter: the manhunt in tell aveech continues as police close in on the suspected gunman, who opened fire on a year's day. police say the suspect is 31-year-old man, anarab israeli known to police. a lawyer for the family says the family's home was raided, that his brother was arrested and a computer confiscated. people are told to go about their everyday lives, including business. alex goldstein was just blocks

>> when the ambulances and police started kind of pouring into the neighborhood, that was the moment when i realized that something was going on. >> reporter: goldstein says witnesses were quick to respond to the shooting. >> one thing you see in israel all the time, when anything does happen, people always run towards what just occurred, not away from it. either to offer help or support or whatever they can do. >> reporter: he says attacks in tell aveev have been less common and people are doing what they can to move on while remembering the victims. >> i think that there's an interesting mix of emotions that happen in israel when something like this occurs, the first eemotion this is a horrible tragedy and the mourning process that the nation goes through. and the reaction that we're not going to let our lives be disturbed, because if we did, our lives would be disturbed every single day. >> reporter: goldstein was in boston at the time of the marathon manhunt and says it's been interesting to compare the two tragedies that have gripped

>> i would say that the reaction i've seen in terms of the manhunt is very, very different than what i experienced, you know, living through the marathon bombings, you know, bag part of the lockdown in boston. it certainly isn't that kind of feeling here. police are pretty focused. >> reporter: jadiann thompson, 7 news today in new england. >> nancy: wild weather continuing to wreak havoc across the midwest. president obama officially declaring a state of emergency in missouri. the president signing a federal emergency declaration for the state yesterday. so far severe flooding there has killed 24 people in the midwest and floodwaters continue to rise. people remain on high alert as more storms may be on the way. they keep calling it the 100-year flood, i'd call the ten-year flood, because it keeps coming around. >> nancy: the governors of missouri and illinois toured various flooded areas this weekend. search-and-rescue teams are sill looking for anyone who may be missing.

pieces after it exploded, destroying at least 50 homes nearby. officials say a gas leak caused that explosion early saturday morning. you can see from this helicopter video the piles of debris scattered all across the street and the trees. three people were hospitalized, including the home's owner with officials are still investigating the cause. new this morning, armed protesters taking over a federal wildlife refuge in oregon. the group broke into the federal building supporting two ranchers convicted of arson. prosecutors say the ranchers started a 130-acre fire to cover up poaching. but they're being unfacial punished for not wanting to sell their land. >> it's owned by the people, it's the people's facility and it's been provided for us to be able to come together and unite

this overreach, this taking of the people's land and resources. >> nancy: several agencies, including a u.s. fish and wildlife service group, are now monitoring the situation. the patriots are in south florida, where they will take on the miami dolphins later today. home field advantage for the playoffs is on the line. and 7's trey daerr has more on how the team is preparing for today's big game. >> reporter: with their home field trampled into a winter wonderland, the patriots bolting foxy -- frosty foxborough for south florida. new year's eve? >> in that room. bed check. >> going down getting adjusted to the weather, you know, getting away from this, it's a business trip. so that's how we're going to take. >> reporter: the pats banking that extra time together on the road could pay dividends heading into the postseason. >> we experienced last year when we went to san diego.

>> nancy: well, talk about starting the year off on the right foot. the next powerball drawing could make someone a whole lot richer. no one won after last night's numbers were pulled. right now the jackpot is an estimated $400 million. that total jumped by more than $20 million before last night's drawing. this after a rush of tickets were purchased over the past few days. the next drawing is wednesday night. i think there's a lot on the line here, bri. every single time there's something that, you know, the jackpot is this high, i'm surprised that i don't win. but i never buy a ticket. i never play.

but do so responsibly, nancy. i'm concerned about that for you. no, i'm not concerned. seasonablesunday for us, where it should be for this time of the year. but the cold drops in overnight tonight and we're even expecting ocean-effect snow for cape cod and the islands. we're talking below freezing, but again very typical for this time of year. however, it doesn't take much wind to take the real feel of those temperatures down. so a breeze about 10 to 15 miles per hour, making it feel like it's 21 degrees in boston. it feels like it's 14 in worcester. so you're heading out for the early bike ride or the sun this morning, you will definitely want to dress for those temperatures. now we did have enough cloud cover earlier this morning to make for beautiful sunrise shots this one from nicole miller. in. i love that. beautiful part of the day. bright for us this morning. again those temperatures very typical for time of year. winter. but you remember just over a

record shattering temperatures into the 70s for some spots. little. once the cold drops in and our temperatures get below freezing, they will not rebound above freezing until we make it into wednesday. so the next couple of days quite in boston today. to the upper 20s for tomorrow. at least we had the sunshine there for moral support. looking through the timeline, we keep the sunshine with us for today, as the arctic front drop, in the wind that's going over from the north, over the relatively warm ocean waters, will make for some snow showers and even some snow squalls for cape cod and the islands, might even clip the outer part of the cape anne as well. meaning some snowfall. not all of us see some snow. this is the same effect as lake-effect snow showers and can quickly put down 1 to 2 to 3-inchs in some spots. the 3-inch totals will be

choosey of what areas see that, but a coating for those areas. that's very good likelihood. partly cloudy overnight tonight. wind chills, though, 10 to 15 degrees. so it will be a very chilly one. tomorrow 22 to 29 for the highs. those are changes we're definitely going to notice. definitely a storm on tap for next weekend. but the details are still a little unclear. looks like a wintery mix, but for now more wet than white. although there could be snow inland. >> nancy: coming up on 7 news today in new england, hillary clinton back tonight campaign trail after the holiday as she makes her first trip of the year to new hampshire. also ahead, the force proving to be to be too strong.
